The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has announced the formation of a high-level investigation committee to determine the cause of death of Jubo Dal activist Touhidul Islam.

The ISPR assured that appropriate legal action would be taken against anyone found guilty following the investigation.

"Appropriate steps have been taken to investigate this unexpected and sad incident. Meanwhile, the camp commander of the said army camp has been withdrawn with immediate effect. In addition, a high-level investigation committee has been formed to uncover the exact cause of death," the statement read.

Touhidul was picked up from his home allegedly by the joint forces early yesterday.

"The joint forces informed us around 11:00am that an injured man was found in Jhakunipara on the banks of the Gumti River. Police rescued him and took him to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead," Mohinul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said yesterday.

His body bore marks of trauma and injuries, according to an inquest report made by the Kotwali Police Station in Cumilla.

There are dark, swollen marks that appear to be from blunt traumas on his belly, lower abdomen, the rear side of his thighs, both arms, and the big toe of his left foot, an inquest report said.

Family members alleged that he was tortured to death.
